How should I set up A, CNAME and MX records for a chin strap online store?
I am setting up an online store that sells chin straps for sleeping, and I would like to confirm that I have the DNS records right before I move the domain to PointDNS. My plan is to create an A record for the root domain pointing to my store platform’s IP address, a CNAME record so that “www” points to the root domain or to the platform’s hostname, and MX records for the email addresses I want to use for customer support and order messages. I also plan to add a TXT record for SPF so order confirmation emails are less likely to land in spam, and I would like to lower the TTL to a short value a day before the change so the switch takes effect faster. I have been looking at how a chin strap for sleeping shop is organised, with separate pages for products, sizing, shipping and contact, and I want the domain to work cleanly for all of those pages.
My questions are about the details. Is it better to point the root domain with an A record or use an ALIAS or ANAME record if the store platform gives a hostname instead of an IP? How long should I expect propagation to take after I change the nameservers, and how can I check it properly from different locations? Do I need a separate CNAME for each subdomain, such as one for a blog or a help centre? And is there anything I should add for security and email delivery, such as CAA records, DKIM or DMARC, before the store goes live? Any checklist or common mistakes to avoid would be really useful for a first-time setup.
